The Reino Keski-Salmi Loppet is gearing up for its 2024 edition at the Larch Hills Ski Area in Salmon Arm, BC, on Saturday, January 20th. This annual cross-country ski event offers a range of recreational and competitive distances, catering to both seasoned athletes and families looking to enjoy the trails. In addition to being a ski competition, the event also supports the Heart and Stroke Foundation, with participants encouraged to contribute through fundraising.

Event Overview

This year, participants can choose from recreational races spanning 10 km, 17 km, and 30 km, while competitive distances include 5 km, 10 km, 17 km, and 34 km. Each distance is tailored to different age groups and abilities, ensuring an inclusive experience for skiers of all levels. Notably, U10 (ages 8-9) and U12 (ages 10-11) skiers have a 5 km course, and U14 participants will now ski a 10 km route. For the 34 km race, participants will complete two 17 km loops, offering a mix of rolling terrain and scenic vistas.

Key Registration Dates:

  • Registration is available online and closes on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 11:59 PM PST. Late entries will not be accepted.

Bib Pick-up:

  • Bibs can be collected on Saturday, January 20th, between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM at the Larch Hills Chalet. There will be no bib pick-up available on the day before the race.

New for 2024

Several updates are in place for the 2024 edition:

  • New Turnaround Points: The 10 km course now includes a turnaround at Plantation Place, descending toward the stadium along Arwen’s Dream trail.
  • Bib Pick-up Changes: No Friday pick-up; Saturday morning is now the designated time for collecting race bibs.
  • New Categories: U10 and U12 skiers now have their own distinct courses, and U14 skiers will participate in the 10 km race for the first time.

Race Facilities and Amenities

Participants can take advantage of on-site facilities, including a day lodge with running water, washrooms, and outdoor porta-potties. Aid stations will be placed every 10 km or less along the race routes, ensuring hydration and energy support throughout the event.

A hot lunch will be served at the finish line, and after the race, participants are invited to the après-ski celebration, featuring a wine and cheese gathering at the SASCU Recreation Centre. The event includes draw prizes, pizza by the slice, and a much-anticipated Loppet Video showcasing race highlights.

Trail Passes and Membership

Trail passes are not required for registered racers, coaches, or those pre-skiing the course on Friday. However, family members who wish to ski the trails will need to purchase a day pass either via etransfer or the on-site trail fee box. A day license is also required for participants who are not members of a ski club or have not paid the insurance fee through Nordiq Canada or Cross Country BC.

Cold Weather Policy

The event will follow Nordiq Canada’s cold weather guidelines, with races subject to postponement or cancellation if temperatures drop below -25°C. Safety measures are in place, and participants will be notified of any changes should challenging weather conditions arise.

Awards and Recognition

Medals will be awarded to the top three skiers in each class, including a special chocolate medal for U5, U8, U10, and U12 participants. Trophies will be presented to overall winners, as well as special recognition for the youngest and oldest participants, along with the skier who has traveled the farthest to participate.
